A highpoint in Sydney’s past

Nelsons Ridge was a major landmark for early explorers, being the highest point between the Blue Mountains and Central Sydney. The earliest farms in the area were established in the late eighteenth century and Prospect Hill became associated with Aboriginal frontier warfare. The great Aboriginal warrior, Pemulwuy, fought a successful guerrilla war against the British for almost 20 years. The site was also host to one of the first Aboriginal/European reconciliation meetings held in 1805.

Nearby Greystanes was given its name by Nelson Lawson, the son of famous explorer William Lawson due to the volcanic rock on Prospect Hill: “Grey” being its colour and “Stanes” being the Scottish word for stones.
